The
construction of the Visual Arts Studios marks the first new building construction
on the UTPB campus in more than twenty years. The design concept began with
a desire to provide a simple, low-cost facility, which will be architecturally
compatible with the existing campus architecture at UTPB. The studios include
spaces for ceramics, sculpture, woodworking, metal fabrication, painting and
printmaking. In an effort to provide the most cost-effective envelope, the building
is constructed using tilt-up concrete panels colored to complement existing
campus architecture. A freestanding monolith simultaneously marks the entrance
to the building and provides a termination to the pedestrian axis connecting
to the center of the Campus.
